Yleistä höpinää/General ramblings
Ensimmäiset päivät ja pääorientaatio ovat jo takanapäin, ja ensi viikolla pitäisi keskittyä opintoihin vihdosta viimein. Sitä ennen vuorossa on kuitenkin vielä Freshers' Fortnightiin eli tulokkaiden tervetuliaisviikkoihin kuuluvia bileitä, joista tärkeimpinä Freshers' Ball tänä perjantaina, sekä ensi viikon päätöstapahtuman suuri ilotulitus.
Sen lisäksi tänään oli ensimmäinen kahdesta Freshers' Fayre -tapahtuman päivästä, jossa kaikki harrastustoimikunnat, urheilujaostot ja monet paikalliset firmat esittäytyivät ja tunkivat mainoksia, tikkareita, mukeja ja pinssejä käsiin niin nopeasti kuin suinkin vain ehtivät. Paikallinen Spar antoi mukaan mm. pastaa, energiajuomaa ja juustonaksuja ja Domino's -pizzamesta tarjosi ensimmäisen pitsatilauksen ilmaiseksi. Itse liityin Tolkien- ja Game of Thrones -klubien meililistalle, ja menen varmaankin tsekkaamaan Harry Potter -kerhon aloitustilaisuuden. Myöskin huispauskerhoon liittyminen kutkutteli, mutta aivan täysi ja kuuma teltta pakottivat tekemään nopeita ratkaisuja, vaikka sisäinen nörttini pistikin vastaan. No, kaikkea ei voi saada.
Alla muutamia kuvia, ja hieman selostusta opiskelijakylän oloista. :)
The first days are now behind and the main orientation has been seen and done. Next week we should finally be focusing on our studies. Before that we still have some parties included in the events of the Freshers' Fortnight, the most important ones being Freshers' Ball this Friday, and next week's closing event with big fireworks.
On top of all that today was the first day of a two-day event called the Freshers' Fayre, in which all the Student Union societies and many local companies had their stands, and thrust free stuff like fliers, candy, mugs and badges your way as fast as they could. The local Spar offered us a food bag containing, among others, pasta, energy drink and Cheetos, and Domino's Pizza had an offer for a free delivery. I joined the e-mail lists of the Tolkien and Game of Thrones appreciation societies, and I am also interested to check out the welcome event of the Harry Potter society. I also eyed the Quidditch Team's stand, but the marquee was so jam-packed and hot that I had to make fast decisions even though my inner nerd threw a temper tantrum. Well, you can't have everything.

Asuminen/Accommodation
Yleisnäkymää yo-kylän taloista: kaikki ovat brittityyliin samannäköisiä. / Some overall view from the village: in true British style, all of the houses are identical.
Karun keittiön vastapainoksi muutama kuva ulkoa: tuon sillan yli kuljetaan kylän pääaukiolla, jossa on asukastoimisto/posti, pubi, minimarketti ja (ällö ja kallis) itsepalvelupesula. / In contrast to the barren kitchen, here are some pictures from outside: we go over that bridge to reach the village centre, around which are the village (post) office, a pub, a minimart and a (gross and expensive) launderette.
Ja viimeisenä minun huoneeni! Kovin pieni se on, mutta ajaa asiansa. Julisteet ostin tänään yliopistolla olleilta posterikauppiailta, olivat ihmeen halpoja laatuunsa nähden! Lakanat hieman harmittavat, olisi niin tehnyt mieli ostaa Tom of Finland -lakanat ennen tänne tuloa (vaikka jo pelkästään sen takia että suomalaiset ovat näköjään ainoita, jotka ovat keksineet laittaa kädenreiät pussilakanoihin), mutta ne eivät varmaan olisi sopineet kovin hyvin noiden vuodevaatteiden päälle. :/ / And lastly my room! It's a little small, but it'll do the trick. I bought my wonderful posters today from a vendor at the university, they were surprisingly cheap considering they are of good quality. The linen I don't really like, I would have wanted to bring some Tom of Finland -sheets here with me (if only for the fact that Finnish people seem to be the only ones to make holes for hands at the end of the bedspread covers), but they wouldn't probably have fit very well over my English bedding. :/
Siinä hieman ensimakua elämästä Walesissa. :) Seuraavalla kerralla taidan kirjoittaa ensimmäisistä luennoista, paikallisesta ruoasta/ruokakulttuurista ja walesiläisestä juhlimisesta, mikä onkin hyvin ajankohtaista nyt kun rugbyn world cup -ottelu Englanti vs. Wales lähestyy ja sitä varten yliopiston pihalle pystytetään teltta livelähetystä varten! / That was the first taste of my life in Wales. :) Next time I will probably be writing about my first lectures, the local food/food culture and about the Welsh way to party: very topical now that the World Cup -game England vs. Wales is nearing, and the university is going to hold a live viewing in a marquee for it!
